Let There be "Wight"

My least favorite part of fall/winter is watching the days get shorter.  I think my three-year-old friend Audrey would agree.

Audrey:  "Mom. I don't wike it dawk.   Make it wight."

Mom:  "I can't do that honey, only God can. If you want it light outside, tell Him."

Audrey:   "God, GOD, GOOOOOOOOOOOWD. I want it wight pwease. And I sing you a song. Jesus wuvs wittle chiwwin. Wed, Yewwow, black, white, piiiiiiink, and pwecious. De end".

Mom:  Oh my.......

Olympic UGGHH!

My ten-year-old daughter and I waited all week to watch the opening ceremonies of the Olympics.  I soaked up the music and the pagentry.  She waited paitently hour after hour to see The Parade of Nations.  Finally...twenty-one letters into the parade...The United States of America enters the arena.  Eyes glued to the television my little diva checks out their outfits and remarks in disgust, "OMG!!!  Did you see those shoes?  They are totally theraputic (I think she may have been going for orthopedic here.)  I can't even look."  With that, she rolled over, snuggled under her blanket and drifted off to sleep.  U-S-A!   U-S-A!  U-S-A!

Food Fright

Today at lunch five-year-old Julia prayed, "Dear Jesus, I hope that you can bless this food ..."
It makes Mom wonder how bad the food looked if Julia wasn't even sure Jesus could bless it.

What's an engineer?

My nine-year-old daughter Jae and I were talking.

Me: Kate’s dad is an engineer.

Jae: What’s an engineer.
Me: People with college degrees that use their math and science skills to build, create, and problem solve.
Jae: Like an architect.

Me: Well, they can create “things” like bridges. Sometimes they work with roads or water to recreate and improve our environment. Kate’s dad works with water.

Jae: So…he’s a plumber?

Play-dead

While playing with Play-doh five-year-old Julia gave Mom this very important advice:
"You shouldn't eat Play-doh, because then you will get very sick and won't be able to talk...because you will be dead".

Thanks, Julia for that little safety nugget.  Accidental deaths can be prevented!

Pulling into the driveway after spending the day with her nine-year-old daughter, my friend Amy heard, "Mommy, your panties are blooming!"
UMMMM....I think she meant peonies.

Easter Party

Over the weekend my daughter and her two friends attended an Easter party at our bank.  There was a small turn out...just those three.  They entered a drawing for a candy machine.  On the way home from the party Madelyn announced, "My instincts tell me I'll probably win!"  I say the odds are good!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Last week nine-year-old MJ was frustrated about a situation at school.  She felt some classmates were not respecting her property.  So...she decided to send her teacher, Mrs. Lugge,  an e-mail discussing her concerns.  Her teacher read the e-mail, addressed the problem and made MJ feel a sense of empowerment.

Flash forward to this morning.  MJ and Mom jump into the car for the ride to school.  The backseat is covered with fast food wrappers and empty sacks.

MJ:  What is going on with all the trash back here.
Mom:  Dad took my car yesterday to his baseball meeting.  Wasn't that nice of him to leave his trash for us?
MJ:  He does that all the time in his truck.
Mom:  Well, if he wants to do that to his truck that's fine, but I think he needs to respect my property.
MJ:   Maybe you should write a letter to Mrs. Lugge.

Good Idea!!

Job Change

An elementary age girl received some mail from the bank.  It was the monthly statement for her savings account.

Mom: You've got mail from the bank.
Girl:  What is it?
Mom:  It's a statement.  It tells how much money you have in your savings account.  Here...open it.
Girl:  Why do they think you're a custodian?  You're a teacher.
Mom:  WHAT?
Girl:  It says my name right here on the envelope.  Next to your name it says "custodian".
Mom: (LAUGH!!!) That just means I am the adult in charge that helps with your account.
Girl:  They thought you were a janitor.

Baby Shower

Went camping this weekend with my Brownie troop. Trust me, I'm not a nature girl. So...this was a BIG DEAL for me. Saturdays in October always seem busy, so we had several mommies and one daddy tag-teaming to make it an experience the girls wouldn't forget. Some mommies came and went shuttling girls back and forth to soccer games and previous commitments. One mommy stayed all night, but left early to attend a baby shower.
When we woke up Saturday morning at sunrise the first thing we did was throw on our shoes with our flannel jammies, gather the girls and hike to the bathroom. While the girls took turns brushing, rinsing and spitting I basked in the glory of their chatter. Had to smile when I stumbled upon this conversation at the sinks:

"Where did Mrs. S go?"
"She had to go to a baby shower."
"What's a baby shower?"
"I think that's where they sprinkle water over a baby's head."
"oh"

Fashioniesta

Today eight-year-old Jae and I had exactly 45 minutes after arriving home from school to do homework, eat a snack, put on dance wear, fix hair (ponytail) and get out the door. Forty-six minutes later I'm quickly whipping up Jae's ponytail as she diligently digs through her box of hair accessories to find the perfect clip. In my best MOM voice I say, "Just pick a clip. There's no time for fashion." Jae looks me straight in the eye and says in a most serious tone, "Mom, there's ALWAYS time for fashion." Apparently that's true, because we arrived at dance 6 minutes late.
